Tinnitus & Hyperacusis CARE at the University of Maryland, College Park
Community. Access. Resources. Education.
At the University of Maryland, we are dedicated to providing exceptional care for individuals experiencing tinnitus and hyperacusis. As a teaching institution, our patients work with graduate students who employ evidence-based practices while supervised by qualified and experienced audiologists. This teaching model benefits both our patients and future clinicians, who gain valuable experience and insight by working with individuals affected by tinnitus and hyperacusis.
What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head without an actual external source. People often describe it as ringing, buzzing, hissing, roaring, chirping, or a mix of these sounds. It can vary in intensity and frequency and may significantly impact daily life.
What is Hyperacusis?
Hyperacusis refers to an increased sensitivity to everyday sounds that are normally well tolerated. For individuals with hyperacusis, certain sounds may trigger discomfort, annoyance, fear, or even pain. This condition is often seen alongside tinnitus.
Our Approach to Care
Our Tinnitus/Hyperacusis Care appointments are designed to offer comprehensive support through a structured process:
1. Tinnitus/Hyperacusis Evaluation ($60 - $290)
Your care begins with a thorough evaluation to better understand your unique needs and determine the most appropriate next steps. Assessments may include:
- Thorough case history,
- Comprehensive audiological evaluation
- Ultra-high frequency testing,
- Loudness discomfort level assessment,
- Tinnitus pitch/loudness matching,
- Otoacoustic emissions.
2. Individualized Tinnitus/Hyperacusis Care Consultation ($400.00)
During this appointment, we will:
- Review your test results from your previously completed Tinnitus/Hyperacusis Evaluation
- Discuss the causes and theories behind tinnitus and hyperacusis
- Explore a range of management and treatment options
Demonstrations of sound therapy or other management devices may be provided. At the end of the consultation, you will receive personalized recommendations tailored to your specific needs.
3. Follow up appointment ($75/per half hour)
We offer follow-up appointments as needed to support your ongoing care. These visits may include continued counseling, adjustments to your management plan, and additional recommendations based on individual needs.
Our clinic now accepts insurance, but costs associated with tinnitus/hyperacusis appointments are not fully covered by any insurance plan. For more information about costs, insurance inquiries, or to schedule an appointment, please contact us at 301-405-4218 or by email at hespclinic [at] umd.edu
Tinnitus Support & Management Group
We also host a free, quarterly Tinnitus Support and Management Group, open to anyone in the U.S. or abroad—including individuals with tinnitus or sound sensitivity, as well as their friends and family members. Each one-hour meeting includes:
- A 20–25-minute presentation led by audiology doctoral students from the University of Maryland
- Time for open discussion with peers
These sessions are educational and supportive in nature and are not intended to replace formal counseling. Instead, they offer a safe space to share experiences and draw strength from a community that understands.
